In order to care for those confirmed to have COVID-19 and high-risk suspects, the Infectology service began this week at the Amalia Simoni clinical-surgical hospital, which will allow the opening of the other areas of the institution to continue and minimize the risks of internal transmission of the disease, as well as comply with established biosecurity protocols.
The room, although now it will only serve COVID-19 patients, it intends to attend other contagious diseases such as dengue. For this, it has all the technological and human resources responsible for 32 beds, including four for intensive care. According to Dr. Rodolfo Emilio Domínguez Rosabal, deputy director of Medical Assistance at the hospital, the experienced staff has treated positive patients during the different stages of the pandemic.
“Cases are received from the entire province that are evaluated by their health areas, according to the risks they present. Here they are reclassified and, depending on their status, they are placed in intensive care units, minimum care or intensive care.
“We must thank Cuban scientists for the search, since the beginning of the pandemic, for anti-inflammatory drugs for the first variants that circulated, and also for the vaccines that they made available to us. The number of serious, critical and deceased patients has been reduced considerably since immunization; if today we have a room for critical patients without admissions, it is due to this”.
Despite the slight increase in positive cases in recent weeks, the "Amalia" resumed the regional Rehabilitation service this week; In the next few days, he plans to open the Hematology and external consultations, which are added to the already reestablished Legal Medicine.
To the cost of 800,000 pesos for the new room, another five million are added, which includes, among other works, the civil construction of the site where a medicinal oxygen production plant will be installed, which will largely reduce dependence on bottles of this gas.
